Heung is, emotion that arouse fun, joy.

만세.jpg

I think you got the hang of it!

I may add some explanation about this.

From long time ago, in Korea!

Heung not just refers to emotion but also refers things

like singing and dancing.

Now you can see it?

K-pop is also one of a thing that represent Korea's Heung.

Now then, history of Heung! Let's get started~

First, we cast back to prehistoric times.

At the time of the ancient country,

it was agrarian society, so climate was very important.

Therefore, chief priest who was a mediator

between god ruled as an leader(ruler)

As this time, there was a festival culture which enjoys

singing and dancing along with ancestral rites.

Korean 'Heung' began from here!

We could find 'Heung' in Silla, of Three States.

It is Hangga,

old Korean folk songs.

책.jpg

Hangga is notation of Hangchal, which is poetry with a fixed form.

It was written from Silla period to former part of Goryeo.

So, we also call it folk song of the Silla.

Mostly, it was written by monks or Hwarang

and it contained a wide variety as

folk song, incantation song, ceremonial song and lyrical song.

 Seo-dong song.

Princess Sunhwa

with Seodong

hugging at night

Especially Seo-dong song was easy to sing .

So, children sang it very often.

Like this, if Silla had Hangga,

there was Goryeo song for Goryeo.

Goryeo song is song written in Goryeo age literally.

There are, however, some difference.

Compared to Hangga, written by monks and Hwarang ,

Goryeo song was made by people.

It is about young person who renounce the world

and wandering Cheongsan and beach,

singing one's sorrow.

It indicates life feeling of that time.

Most distinct feature of Goryeo song is that

it has a refrain.

Line that has no meaning is keep repeated.

If you say it out loud,

you can see that it has funny sound and its rhythm is very lively.

 Goryeo song had various theme.

First, there was theme about royalty to the king

and because it was a song of ordinary people

it contained very frank contents.

Especially, there were so many love song that you would like.

But, afterward, this kind of songs were named as

'love song between male and female'

and criticized for lascivious words.

The next is age of Joseon dynasty.

There are two, Jongmyo ritual music ,

court music played in ceremonial day,

and Pansori that considered as Korea's representative folk music.

These two are the representative Heung

which are listed as World Heritage by the UNESCO.

Above this, there are work song which were sang during farming,

song by Gisaeng (Korean Geisha) etc.

Many kind of songs were there and still continued until nowadays.

However, after Joseon dynasty Korea had Japanese colonial era

and went over a modernization.

At this time, music was slow in progress,

contents were restricted and moreover,

used as means of infusing idea.

Give you more detail explanation,

in 1910's, there was Changga

which was about dejection from losing sovereignty.

And 1920's, affect of western music,

there was 'Bongsunhwa', 'homesick' etc.

Talking about faint feeling of Korean ethinc group.

1930's Ahn Ik-tae composed Korea fantasia,

and it became our national anthem.

In 1940's and 1950's, mostly it was about a Korean war,

pain of dispersed families and sense of futility about the war.

Was it more better after the war?

1950's and 1960's were the era of a dictatorial government,

so many songs were forbidden

by the reason of impure thought and vulgar lyrics.

Free of expression was suppressed!!

This 50 years can be named as

Dark Ages of Korean musical history.

But, thanks to this troubled history,

Korean 'Heung' developed into K-pop, receiving so many affects.

K-pop, that you can easily enjoy, are affected by foreign culture

so it is a liitle different from our traditional music.

Just looking at the picture above, very different huh?

From 1960's, Korea achieved remarkable development

and 'Heung' develooped into a modern way.

But, traditional music still take up it's quarters.

Many art halls hold Korean classical music concert

and nowadays, mixed version of traditional music and modern music is very popular.

Many Korean films and dramas used 'Heung' as their important points.
